OVERLOADING, DETERIORATION AND REPLACEMENT TIME OF VEHICLE FLEETS OF COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT COMPANIES IN NIGE

Henry Inegbedion, Samuel Osifo

Abstract

The study investigated the impact of vehicle overloading on vehicle deterioration and total costs and hence the replacement time of vehicle fleets of commercial transport companies in Nigeria. The longitudinal design was adopted. Specifically, it is a longitudinal study of the vehicle fleets of two anonymous transport companies based in Benin City, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of all interstate transport
companies in Nigeria, and multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in selecting the companies used as well as the routes studied. Discrete dynamic programming, value iteration, was used to determine the optimum replacement time. An overloading factor was developed as a function of the excess load relative to the vehicle carrying capacity;
subsequently, the impact of overloading on vehicle replacement time was determined, using the discrete dynamic programming technique. Results indicate that overloading, significantly precipitates vehicle deterioration and thus, influences replacement time of vehicle fleets; impact of overloading on vehicle deterioration was found to be significantly related to distance travelled; higher and lower vehicle costs generate lower
and higher replacement time intervals with financial penalties associated with delays beyond the optimal replacement time.The need for relevant authorities, like owners and managers of commercial transport companies as well as operations managers, to desist from vehicle overloading was suggested, among others.
