STAFF TRAINING AND LABOUR RODUCTIVITY AMONG SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES (SMEs) IN NIGERIA: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract


The paper “Staff Training and Labour Productivity among Small and Medium
Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria” focused on how workers training affects
their productivity at work among small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in the non-agricultural sector of the Nigerian economy. Lack of proper training of employ e e s and the at t endant chal l enge of improv ing the i r
contributions/productivity to total output in the face of challenges in production patterns, technological requirements and innovation cum intensifying competition, constitute the research problem. The specific objectives of the study were to ascertain the effect of employee training on labour productivity and to evaluate the effect of employees training on the use and transfer of technology among Nigerian small and medium scale enterprises. Data were sourced from World Bank data base through World Bank Enterprise Surveys for 2014 and 2015. Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and 2 Stage Least Squares (2SLS) software package, were used to analyse the data. The results of the study showed amongst others that workers training has positive and significant impact on labour productivity of the SMEs in Nigeria, and workers training has positive and significant impact on the use and transfer of technology among the SMEs, it was recommended that training of newly recruited staff should be made mandatory policy for small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria.
