EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ENTREPRENEURSHIP ON PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN ONITSHA METROPOLIS, ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract


This study examined “Effects of Social Media Entrepreneurship on Performance of Selected SMEs in Onitsha Metropolis, Anambra State, Nigeria.” The objectives of the study were to: examine the effect(s) of social media on sales volume of the selected Small and Medium Enterprises; examine the influence(s) of social media on service delivery of the selected SMEs and ascertain the relationship between social media entrepreneurship and profitability of the selected SMEs. The convenience
sampling technique was employed, where one hundred and forty (140) SMEs were sampled with a well-structured questionnaire. Data collated were extensively analyzed employing various descriptive statistics, the simple regression and correlation coefficient models. The results of the
socio-economic characteristics showed a large proportion (60%) of entrepreneurs in the study area were male, with majority (78.6%) of them being young. The result showed that majority of the entrepreneurs were well educated, with majority of them having an experience of above 3years. The result from the effect of social media on sales volume of the SMEs showed that the utilization of the aspects of social media by the enterprises on their sales volume was significantly positive. From the
result of the influence of social media on service delivery of the enterprises, the result revealed a positive and significant influence at 1% level. The result from the significance of social media on the profit level of the selected SMEs area revealed a positive, but weak relationship between social media and profitability of the enterprisers. Drawing from the findings, it was recommended that entrepreneurs should be fully engaged in the utilization of social media networks that will ensure that their businesses are updated to reap profit.
